What Is Ulurp

Projects/Workshops/WhatIsULURP

WHAT IT IS. ULURP may sound like a monster (and some people think it is), but it stands for Uniform Land Use Review Procedure and it’s the process by which major land use changes get reviewed and approved in New York City. It’s long, complicated, and involves lots of players, making it difficult for communities to understand how they can have a say in the land use decisions that impact their neighborhoods.

The workshop tool is a way for people to learn about the ULURP process, the different players involved, and the role they can play in decision-making. Get hands on with the process as you take a sandwich through all the layers of government and public approvals!

CUP develops and tests the tools in workshops in communities all over New York to ensure that they will best meet the needs of a broad range of advocates and organizers throughout the city.

WHERE IT WORKS. The toolkit works in organizing settings, staff trainings, college classrooms, Community Board meetings, and lots of other places. CUP can train you, your staff, or your members to run a workshop, or we can run a workshop for you. Workshops can range from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

HOW TO GET ONE. We can arrange workshops anywhere in the five boroughs with 3-4 weeks of notice.

Workshop prices start at $500. Some organizations may qualify for reduced rates depending on the ability to pay, audience reached, and level of customization.

Projects/Workshops/WhatIsZoning

WHAT IT IS. Zoning law regulates land use across the city and shapes buildings, blocks, and whole neighborhoods. It can be a tool for preservation or for rapid physical and economic development.

How does it work? Why is it so controversial? This set of activities explains the zoning of density, bulk, land use, and how proposed rezonings could affect your neighborhood. Learn the basics (or build up to topics like inclusionary and contextual zoning) while maxing out your lot with plastic block buildings or laying out a brand new city.

CUP develops and tests the tools in workshops in communities all over New York to ensure that they will best meet the needs of a broad range of advocates and organizers throughout the city. What is Zoning? allows communities to understand the concepts behind zoning, as well as to look at the nuts and bolts of how rezonings can affect their neighborhoods.

What Is Affordable Housing

Projects/Workshops/WhatIsAffordableHousing

WHAT IT IS. “Affordable Housing.” The phrase seems plain enough, but it doesn’t always mean what people think it does! It actually has a technical government definition that can determine what gets built and who lives there. Use these tools to answer the all-important question: “Affordable to whom?”

This set of activities breaks down affordable housing policy into easy-to-understand visuals. Look at income demographics, rents, and proposed developments in your neighborhood. Learn about affordable housing programs and who’s eligible for them.

Watch the video to see how it works!

Workshops can be customized to focus on any NYC neighborhood, specific affordability programs, or proposed developments in your community. Workshops can range from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Sewer In A Suitcase

Projects/Workshops/SewerInASuitcase

WHAT IT IS. New York City uses over one billion gallons of water every day. What happens to it after we’ve used it? CUP’s Sewer in a Suitcase demystifies the hidden workings of New York City’s water infrastructure by following the journey water takes beyond the drain.

New York relies on something called a combined sewer system. Stormwater from streets and rooftops is collected into the same network of pipes as dirty water from toilets, sinks, and showers. When it rains a lot, the combined sewage and stormwater overflow directly into local waterways.

CUP’s Sewer in a Suitcase is a working model of the city’s sewer system that lets you explore the mechanics of these dirty events and what they mean for our health and environment—all from your own classroom!

WHERE IT WORKS. The Sewer in a Suitcase workshop is fun, engaging, and educational for children and adults alike, and is perfect for use in community workshops; environmental studies or science classrooms; or civics, social studies, and service learning classes. The workshop demonstrates our combined sewer system in action, and introduces concepts like urban watersheds, water infrastructure, and the health impacts of water pollution. Workshops can range from 40 minutes to 1.5 hours.

HOW TO GET ONE. We can arrange workshops anywhere in the five boroughs with 2-3 weeks of notice.

Hire CUP to conduct a Sewer in a Suitcase workshop for $500
Rent a Sewer in a Suitcase for a day to run your own workshop for $100
Rent a Sewer in a Suitcase for a day, with a training session from CUP staff for $200

Trade Offs

Projects/Workshops/TradeOffs

WHAT IT IS. The mayor’s ambitious affordable housing agenda will be realized through the rezoning of over a dozen neighborhoods across New York City’s five boroughs. While many communities are eager to see more affordable housing, they are concerned about what new development could mean for their communities, and whether they will be able to play a meaningful role in the decision-making that shapes them.

The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is developing What’s the Trade-Off? to help communities more effectively participate in the process. Using hands-on activities with a gameboard and plastic blocks, workshop participants use a scaled-down version of their neighborhood to explore what a proposed rezoning could (and should) look like. Through the activities, participants discuss their concerns about increased density — Will new schools be provided to accommodate new families? Will subway service be increased? Won’t existing residents be displaced by increasing rents? — and use case studies from other communities in NYC to identify ways those issues could be addressed through the rezoning. Working together, participants identify shared priorities that they hope to advocate for, and the kinds of trade-offs they are willing to make to achieve a rezoning that benefits their community.

The workshop prepares participants to productively raise their concerns and priorities during public discussions with city agencies and throughout the planning and public approvals process.

WHERE IT WORKS. The toolkit works in organizing settings, staff trainings, college classrooms, Community Board meetings, and lots of other places. Workshops can be customized to include specific issues that are important to your community, like affordability, jobs, and housing preservation. Workshops can range from 60 minutes to 1.5 hours.

HOW TO GET ONE. We can arrange workshops anywhere in the five boroughs with 3-4 weeks of notice.

Workshops normally start at $500, but we are offering free What’s the Trade-Off? workshops for community groups in certain neighborhoods as we develop and test this new tool.

Neighborhood Futures

Projects/Workshops/NeighborhoodFutures

WHAT IT IS. Who decides what gets built in your neighborhood? And who does development benefit? In this professional development workshop for educators, CUP gives you the tools to lead hands-on activities to help your students imagine possible futures for your school’s neighborhood. Teachers learn how to find a site in their community and work with students to identify a variety of potential users and stakeholders. What would different groups want out of this space? Teachers then learn specific design activities they can use to help their students imagine alternate futures for the space from the perspective of various stakeholders. These activities spark conversations about who gets to change places, who benefits from those changes, and students’ hopes and dreams for their neighborhood.

WHERE IT WORKS. This workshop is geared towards educators interested in leading hands-on projects that take students out of the classroom and into their communities. It provides tools that can be used in all sorts of classes, such as civics, arts, architecture, and urbanism. Workshops can range from 1.5 hours to 3 hours.

HOW TO GET ONE. We can arrange workshops anywhere in the five boroughs with 3-4 weeks of notice.
